Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM) Victoria is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking collaboration with The Rubbish Film Festival, a highly regarded program that has been inspiring students in Ireland to think creatively and sustainably since 2016.
In 2024, the film festival is inviting secondary school students from Australia to take part in this creative media challenge. Having successfully grown to a national competition in Ireland last year, The Rubbish Film Festival continues its remarkable journey by including students from Down Under.
This exciting partnership with ATOM invites students in Senior/Upper Secondary Years 10–12 to take part in a competition that encourages them to harness the potential of their mobile devices to create films no longer than sixty seconds, with a dedicated focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This year’s festival theme revolves around two key SDGs:
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production: Explore responsible consumption and production practices. Advocate for more sustainable lifestyles and the reduction of waste in your films.
SDG 13: Climate Action: Address the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on our planet. Explore solutions, raise awareness, and inspire action to combat climate-related challenges.
ABOUT RUBBISH FILM FESTIVAL
The Rubbish Film Festival, with over eighty participating schools across Ireland, stands as a beacon of creativity and environmental advocacy. As a collaborative effort, the festival emphasises the importance of collective action in nurturing students’ dedication to a more sustainable future.
2024 is the first year that the festival has expanded to include international entries from Australia!
COMPETITION OUTLINE
Theme: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Eligibility: Secondary school students in Years 10–12 in Australia and Ireland
Film Length: Up to sixty seconds
Entry Criteria: Entry is free; films must be a collaborative effort; students can submit only one film; and there is no limit to the number of films per school.
PRIZES
In addition to your students having their films shared and viewed by an international audience, winning entries will receive a trophy and/or digital certificates.
ATOM will also publish finalist films on our (new) TikTok channel and YouTube channel, along with social media coverage to celebrate the creative work of participating schools and students.
